July 18, 2014
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- WKU head women's tennis coach Jonatan Berhane announced the signing of Andreanna Christopoulou to a grant-in-aid agreement and Emilia Granstrom to a National Letter of Intent, and the duo will suit up for the Lady Toppers in 2014-15.
Prior to coming to WKU, Christopoulou played professionally in Greece and reached a career-high 1082 world ranking in doubles in 2013. The Athens, Greece native bested world No. 499-ranked Dalia Zafirnova in 2012 and earned a world singles ranking as high as 1209 in 2011. She won in both singles and doubles at the National High School Championship and was the No. 1-ranked junior in Greece in 2010 and also represented her country in the European Championships as a 17- and 18-year-old.
"Andreanna is a very complete player," Berhane said. "She moves very well on the court and hits a very heavy ball. She also likes to move forward and play volleys. She will make a very big impact in singles and doubles for us, and I am very excited to see her play matches for WKU."
Granstrom was ranked in the top-five in Sweden among players under the age of 18, and she won the Swedish National Championship twice at ages 18 and 21. Granstrom also laid claim to a junior world tennis ranking of 265 and a world ranking of 1200. She represented Sweden during the European Championships as well.
"Emilia will make a big impact on the team as a freshman with her experience playing internationally," Berhane said. "She has a great personality and a huge passion to play tennis. She has a very aggressive tennis game and likes to control the game from the baseline, and she has the quality to be able to push herself on every point."
