BOWLING GREEN, Ky.--Using a complete team effort in all facets of the game, the Western Kentucky University softball team (7-4-1) shut out Miami (OH) (3-4) by a score of 7-0 in day two of the Holiday Inn Hilltopper Spring Fling on Saturday.
Behind the arm of Hannah Miniard (3-0), the freshman and the defense held the Red Hawks to just one hit in the fourth inning. Miniard had three walks and six strikeouts in the complete-game performance.
WKU recorded a season-high 13 hits in the game, led by junior Shawna Sadler's 3-for-4 effort. The Illinois native also added a pair of RBIs. Senior Amanda Thomas, junior Preslie Cruce and sophomore Bethany Oglesby had two hits apiece.
The Lady Toppers took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Sadler was the first to cross home plate off of a senior Kelsie Mattox RBI single. Mattox and Oglesby then scored after Cruce powered a double to left center.
One more run came on the board in the fourth frame, as Oglesby opened the inning by reaching base on a Red Hawk miscue. The sophomore would move to third on another Cruce double before scoring on senior Olivia Watkins' single up the middle.
WKU capped the 7-0 score in the sixth with a trio of runs, as freshman Amber Williams brought in the first from Thomas' RBI single. Senior Tiffany Gooch and freshman India Steward then rounded the bases on Sadler's two-base hit.
