BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- The WKU women's soccer team will take the pitch for the first official games of the 2015 season against UT Martin and Miami (Ohio) this weekend at the WKU Soccer Complex. The Lady Toppers will first go to battle with UT Martin on Friday at 6:00 pm and then will host Miami on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
WKU has spent the month of August in preseason preparation that included two-a-day practices and two exhibition matches against regional opponents. The Lady Toppers hosted Xavier at WKU Soccer Complex on Aug. 14 but dropped the match 2-0. They then traveled to NKU to take on the Norse. The game was played at a much faster pace than the first of the exhibition games for the Lady Tops, doubling their shot total. Each team found the net in the second half, after a scoreless first half and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
The Lady Toppers return all but one starter from the 2014 squad that finished seventh in Conference USA and won 10 games on the season. Looking to add to her illustrious career, Lauren Moats returns for her senior season after leading WKU in scoring with seven goals in 2014. Iris Dunn, the second-leading scorer last season, will return for her junior year after scoring five goals in 2014. Sophomore goalkeeper Allison Leone, will look to add to her 90 saves and seven shutouts from last season.
Friday will be the first meeting between WKU and UT Martin on the pitch, after playing several times in exhibition games in previous seasons. The Skyhawks feature 15 newcomers after losing all but one starter from the 2014 season. UT Martin went 12-6-2 on the season last year finishing fourth in the Ohio Valley Conference.
It will also be the first meeting between the Lady Toppers and Miami (Ohio) in women's soccer on Sunday. The Redhawks were picked to win the Mid-American Conference in the preseason poll after finishing second in the league last season. They return all but two starters but lost their leading scorer from 2014.
WKU is 9-5 in season openers and 11-3 in home openers in the program's 14-year history. The Lady Toppers are 20-13-9 against teams from Tennessee. WKU has only faced two teams from the state of Ohio in program history (Bowling Green, Xavier) and got wins against both teams.
Friday's match is $1 hot dog night so all in attendance will receive hot dogs for only $1. The first 50 fans to arrive for Sunday's match will be given a custom WKU scarf.
Season tickets are available online at wkusports.com or by calling the WKU ticket office at 1-800-5-BIGRED. A $25 flexible ticket package is available that includes all 10 home games against Xavier, Tennessee Martin, Miami Ohio, Valparaiso, Memphis, Rice, Louisiana Tech, FIU, Marshall and Florida Atlantic.
