Sumler appeared in nine games during his redshirt freshman campaign, ranking fifth on the team with 59 rushing yards via 16 carries. He posted his best output of the season in the opener against Austin Peay on Sept. 1, rushing five times for a career-high 32 yards. He was one of six Hilltoppers to average more than six yards per carry in the contest. He tallied three rushing yards at top-ranked Alabama on Sept. 8. Sumler toted the rock a career-high eight times versus Southern Miss on Sept. 22, finishing the game with 20 yards rushing. He had one carry for four yards in nationally-televised win over Troy on Oct. 11.
Sumler redshirted in his first official season on The Hill.
Sumler amassed over 1,700 yards rushing in his senior season, scoring 28 touchdowns for Pensacola Catholic High School. For his career, he tallied 4,200 yards rushing to go along with 52 touchdowns. He was named First-Team All-Area and Second-Team All-State as well as a PSA All-Star in his senior season. Sumler was rated as the 89th-best running back in the U.S. by ESPN.com, a member of Florida High School Football's Super 75 and rated as a three-star recruit by both ESPN.com and Rivals.com.
