MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Lady Topper Tennis wrapped up the fall season this weekend at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championship hosted by Middle Tennessee. The field included three ranked teams, No. 4 Vanderbilt, No. 18 Kentucky and No. 24 Tennessee, along with several ranked individuals and doubles pairs.
Freshman Moka Ito led the squad as she advanced the furthest through the Regional Championship tournament while splitting her contests 2-2. The Fukushima, Japan native defeated opponents from Butler and Chattanooga. Ito fell to a representative of Tennessee as well as ranked opponent No. 112 Emma Kurtz of Vanderbilt who proceeded to the semifinals of the competition.
Lady Topper graduate student Elpida Malamou defeated an individual from Conference USA foe Middle Tennessee 6-4, 6-0. Malamou finished with a 1-2 record on the weekend after falling to representatives from Cincinnati and Tennessee.
WKU sophomore Monica Malinen marked a 2-1 record in singles during the contest as she defeated a player from Middle Tennessee in a three-set battle, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-2. Malinen was victorious against a member of the EKU tennis team, but fell to an Austin Peay representative 6-0, 7-5.
Paraguay native sophomore Cindy Oest defeated Anna Delaney of Dayton before falling to a Ball State player. Oest also fell to ranked opponent No. 52 Akvile Parazinskaite of Kentucky in a tough 7-5, 6-2 battle. Parazinskaite advanced to the quarterfinals of the Regional Championship.
Sophomore Natalia De Ugarte defeated Miami (OH) player, but fell to an individual from ETSU. Senior Violetta Shatalova fell to representatives from Miami (OH) and Chattanooga.
Ito and Malinen extended their doubles record to 7-2 in the fall season with wins over duos from UT Martin, Memphis and Tennessee. The WKU tandem was defeated in only one doubles match. The match ended with a tiebreaker against a pair representing No. 4 Vanderbilt, finishing with a score of 8-7 (4). Vanderbilt's duo went on to advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Third team all-conference doubles members De Ugarte and Oest rounded out the weekend with a 2-1 record, defeating representatives from Chattanooga and Ball State, while falling to Memphis in an 8-4 battle.
Lady Topper Tennis will take a three month hiatus before beginning its spring season in January.
