Bowling Green, Ky. - The Hilltopper Sports Satellite Network (HSSN) announced today that it will televise a minimum of 16 Western Kentucky University men's and women's basketball games during the 2002-03 season. In addition, HSSN affiliates will carry 10 games involving other schools in the Sun Belt Conference as part of the league's ESPN Regional Television Package.
All HSSN contests will be aired live by originating station WKYU-PBS (Channel 24) in Bowling Green, as well as WYCS-TV (24) in Louisville and WKAG-TV (43) in Hopkinsville. In all, the broadcasts of Hilltopper and Lady Topper basketball will reach nearly 13 million people through HSSN affiliates. Broadcasts will begin this Sunday (Dec. 15) when the Hilltoppers host Illinois State at 3 p.m. (CST) in Diddle Arena.
In its' third year, The Hilltopper Sports Satellite Network has grown beyond our wildest expectations," said Jerry Barnaby, Director of Educational Telecommunications at Western. "WKYU-PBS is able to showcase Western Kentucky University to more people than ever before. HSSN puts Western squarely on the national stage."
Three WKU games - two men's and one women's - will be part of the ESPN/Sun Belt package. The Hilltopper's game at North Texas on Feb. 8, and the men's and women's doubleheader against Middle Tennessee on March 1 in Diddle Arena will join 10 other Sun Belt matchups as part of the package. In addition, six WKU games - five men's and one women's - will be picked up by ESPN Full Court. Men's games against Southern Miss (Dec. 18), St. Francis (Pa.) (Dec. 20), New Orleans (Jan. 16), Florida International (Jan. 30), and Arkansas-Little Rock (Feb. 13), as well as the Lady Topper home game with FIU (Feb. 20), will be part of the Full Court Package.
"We're excited to be able to expand the reach of our network again this year," said David Brinkley, senior producer of HSSN. "This is the most comprehensive package of games we have ever shown. We're proud to be able to bring a lot of Sun Belt basketball to the fans in Kentucky. Most of the other Sun Belt games we are showing will feature upcoming Western opponents, giving fans a chance to see these teams before they come to Diddle Arena."
