Bowling Green, Ky. — Seven Western Kentucky University head coaches will speak on an hour-long panel as part of the Communication Week 2003, sponsored by the Department of Communication.

The panel — titled “Leadership, Teamwork & Motivation: Sports and Communication” — will take place at the Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center Recital Hall Monday (Nov. 3) at 11 a.m. (CST) and will be approximately one hour.

Speaking on the panel will be basketball coaches Darrin Horn and Mary Taylor Cowles, and football coach David Elson, as well as Hilltopper and Lady Topper mentors David Holmes (men’s soccer), Joel Murrie (baseball), Leslie Phelan (softball) and Bill Powell (men’s and women’s swimming). The experience of the panel ranges from Powell’s 34 seasons as head coach of the men’s swimming program (the women began swimming and diving in 1997) to Horn and Elson, both first-year head coaches.

The group has combined to earn 1,489 victories and 18 league championships, and has earned conference coach-of-the-year honors on six occasions.
