WKU Celebrates 2005 Homecoming With Numerous Victories

The Western Kentucky University of Athletics saw two teams sweep a pair of matches as part of the most successful Homecoming weekends in the Hill in recent memory.

The highlight of the weekend was the Topper football team's 38-27 win over Missouri State. Defense dominated for three quarters, but the two teams combined to score 42 points in the final 15 minutes. The contest wasn’t decided until Curtis Hamilton's 55-yard touchdown run in the final two minutes.

Earlier in the day, the Lady Topper volleyball team earned a sweep over North Texas which followed a three-game sweep of Denver Friday. The Lady Toppers are now the lone undefeated in conference play.

The Lady Topper soccer team also picked up a pair of shutout victories, defeating Louisiana -Lafayette and Florida International both by a 2-0 score to improve to 3-1-1 in the Sun Belt; Christi Banes scored a goal in each match for WKU.

The Men's and Women's swimming team opened their 2005-06 season with a sweep of Delta State at The Bill Powell Natatorium Saturday. The Hilltoppers won 114-108, while the Lady Tops won every race en route to a 123-105 victory.

Richard Mupfudze scored in the 23rd minute Saturday to lead the Hilltopper soccer team to a 1-0 Missouri Valley Conference victory at Evansville, their first of the season. Kyle Schroeder made six saves for his fifth shut-out of the year.

On Friday, the cross-country team traveled to Richmond,Ky, for the Eastern Kentucky Open and brought home second-place finishes. Nicole Jaggers led three Lady Toppers in the top 10, while both Cosmas Sigei and William Emase finished in the top five to pace the Hilltoppers.
