Bowling Green, Ky. - Brian Fremund has been named director of Athletic Media Relations at Western Kentucky University effective Oct. 1.
Fremund, the assistant sports information director since 1999, will succeed Paul Just. Just is retiring Oct. 31 after more than 32 full-time years at WKU, the last 24 as sports information director.
Prior to coming to Western, Fremund was assistant SID at the University of New Orleans for two years. He was also interim SID and assistant SID at Jacksonville University.
Fremund said he is grateful for WKU President Gary Ransdell and Athletic Director Wood Selig for "giving me the opportunity to continue serving WKU and Hilltopper Athletics in this new role. It is an exciting time to be on the Hill and be a part of the continued successes of our teams."
Dr. Selig said Fremund's experience both at Western and at other institutions made him a top candidate.
"We are very pleased to announce Brian's appointment," Dr. Selig said. "He will literally be following a legend as he replaces Paul Just. As we looked to fill Paul's shoes, we conducted a national search and had more than 50 candidates apply, many of whom were current directors.
"After extensive interviewing, it became obvious to the committee and our coaches that the best person to lead our media relations activities was already on our staff."
Dr. Selig called Fremund "an obvious choice and one that will help Western enter the new age of technology and expand our daily website publishing efforts at wkusports.com."
Fremund said he hopes to put his experience to good use.
"It's an honor to have worked with many fine people in this business, and few are better than Mr. Just," he said. "I appreciate his efforts to help bring me into the Hilltopper family more than three years ago, and I hope to take what I have learned from him to meet the challenges of promoting a major college athletic program in today's world."
Just, a Louisville native who calls Greenville, Ky., his hometown, started his career at Western 36 years ago as a student. He will continue his involvement in Hilltopper Athletics on a part-time basis.
