Toppers On Tour To Visit Five Kentucky Cities

July 24, 2001

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Hilltopper coaches Dennis Felton, Jack Harbaugh and Shawn Campbell will headline a list of Western Kentucky University athletics personalities who will be making visits to five Kentucky communities on "TOPPERS ON TOUR" in the first six days of August.

The event, which will help kick off the 2001-02 college sports year on the Hill, begins Wednesday, Aug. 1, when "Toppers on Tour" visits Russellville. Western will be in the Logan County seat from 5:30-7 p.m. (CDT) at Solazteca restaurant.

From Russellville, the Tour moves to Doozie's Restaurant in Glasgow Thursday, Aug. 2 (6- 7:30 p.m.).

Then, "Toppers on Tour" does double duty Friday, Aug. 3. First, it's a stop in Scottsville (noon) for a date with the members of the Rotary Club and their guests. That evening, the Topper tour moves on to Owensboro to take part in Friday After 5 festivities at RiverPark Center (6 p.m.).

Finally, the Tour travels to Louisville's Indian Springs Golf Club for the Lee Robertson/Gary Sundmacker Golf Scramble Monday, Aug. 6 (5:30 p.m.).

WKU Athletics Director Dr. Wood Selig, Big Red and other special guests will join the Hilltopper coaches at each stop and fans are invited to come out and meet the Topper troupe.

Harbaugh will preview prospects for his Hilltopper football team in its first season as a member of the Gateway Football Conference, one of the premier leagues in the nation's I-AA ranks. The Toppers, with a number of All-America athletes back in uniform and returning 20 of 22 starters from last year's 11-2 outfit, have been ranked among the country's top five clubs in virtually every preseason poll.

Felton will be on hand to discuss prospects for his highly regarded '01-02 Topper men's basketball team, the defending Sun Belt Conference champs. Paced by 7-1 All-American center Chris Marcus, the Hilltoppers (24-7 last year) have already been rated among the top 35 teams in the nation by an early preseason poll.

And, Campbell, the new man on the Hill, will share his thoughts on the future of the Lady Toppers. His first Topper squad features one of the top returning scorers in the land, All-America candidate Natalie Powers.
