BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Dave Hunziker, director of sports media relations and broadcasting at Radford University for the past eight years, will take over the radio play-by-play duties for Western Kentucky University football and men's basketball this fall.
The 33-year-old Hunziker (pronounced "hun-ZI-ker") was introduced to Western fans at a luncheon sponsored by the WKU Warren County Alumni Club and the Hilltopper Athletic Foundation on the WKU campus today. He will serve as Director of Broadcasting and Sales on the WKU athletics staff and will also call the action for the Hilltoppers on Commonwealth Broadcasting Corporation's Big Red Radio Network. He will assume his duties with both Western and CBC July 3.
"I am excited about the opportunity to come to Western Kentucky and be a part of an athletic program with a tremendous history," Hunziker said. "The chance to serve as the play-by-play announcer for Hilltopper athletics is a great honor and it's certainly the highlight of my radio career.
"The new venture between Western and Commonwealth Broadcasting has tremendous potential," he added. "Everyone involved in this partnership is committed to presenting outstanding broadcasts that will be informative and enjoyable to listen to. I'm thrilled to be a part of that."
Hunziker has more than 17 years of play-by-play experience, dating back to his first basketball broadcast as a high school senior in 1983.
The Kahoka, Mo., native took over the radio and television play-by-play duties at Radford in 1992 and his efforts helped the Radford Sports Radio Network generate record sales revenue. And, his coordination of RU's television efforts led to a record number of TV appearances for the Highlanders in the last two seasons.
"Dave brings a wealth of broadcasting experience to Western as well as a successful sales background, a unique and attractive combination," Western Kentucky Athletics Director Dr. Wood Selig said. "Athletic directors from football and basketball powers throughout the country called in support of his candidacy. We have a real gem in Dave and we know Hilltopper fans will love the energy, enthusiasm and professionalism he will bring to our broadcasts."
Hunziker has served as the play-by-play announcer for the Big South Conference television package on FOX Sports Net South and Home Team Sports for the past five seasons. He also handled play-by-play duties for FOX Sports Net at the 1999 Puerto Rico Thanksgiving Shootout, where he called the action in first round games pitting South Carolina against Virginia and Texas against Arizona State.
"The first step in making The Big Red Radio Network one of the best in the country was to find the best person to become the new voice," Big Red Radio Network Executive Producer Derron Steenbergen said. "Dave Hunziker stood out as someone who brings the entire package to the table. Dave is going to be a huge asset to the University, the radio network and the Bowling Green community. We are very excited to have him on board."
A 1988 cum laude graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism, Hunziker first covered collegiate sports while working at KFRU-AM in Columbia, Mo., from 1987 to 1991. While at KFRU, he served as the anchor on pre- and post-game shows for University of Missouri football and basketball. And, he has covered numerous other major sporting events, including the 1987 National League Championship Series and the 1991 PGA Championship.
Hunziker took his first broadcasting position -- at KMEM-FM in Memphis, Mo. -- in 1983 at age 17. While there, he handled various assignments, including the play-by-play of regional high school sports broadcasts.
He and his wife, Mary Beth (Moranville), a St. Louis native, have two daughters, Mara (3) and Grace (6 months).
