Hilltopper Athletic Foundation Holds Highly Successful "National Signing Day" Event

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The Hilltopper Athletic Foundation, Western Kentucky University's fundraising arm for Hilltopper and Lady Topper Athletics, created, implemented and executed an innovative way to recruit new members to its organization.

The HAF held a "National Signing Day" event on May 31, which summed up a month-long membership drive. Current members, athletic department personnel, coaches and friends worked to sign new members to "Letters of Intent" to ink their commitments to the HAF. The "National Signing Day" event was held in the Topper Club at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium and recognized the efforts of the recruiters while making another effort to reach new members with more phone calls.

During the event, Hilltopper and Lady Topper head coaches read the names of new signees and wrote their names on the "Big Board" at the front of the room. As recruiters made their phone calls, the coaches took the phones when necessary to provide extra encouragement to become a member. New signees were able to don their new WKU hats and take pictures with the coaches in front of the media press conference backdrop as well.

During the month of May 2012 alone, the HAF signed 274 new members to its organization. In 2012 to date, the HAF has added 343 new members, and in the previous three years the most new members the HAF had recruited from January 1-May 31 of the given year was 27.

The HAF and its over 1,600 members play a large part in providing for the student-athletes at Western Kentucky University by generating more than $2 million annually for the athletic department. Membership in the HAF serves as an investment in WKU Athletics and, more importantly, in Hilltopper and Lady Topper student-athletes. Just one HAF member can help offset the cost of equipment, books, meals or even full tuition.

While the "National Signing Day" event has concluded, the recruitment of new HAF members will continue throughout the year to reach the goal of 500 new members and 2,000 total members in the organization by the end of 2012. More information can be found at SupportHAF.org or WKUSports.com.
