Bowling Green, Ky. - Powered by championship performances from its men's basketball, swimming and volleyball teams, Western has amassed 75.5 points in the standings through the conclusion of the conference's winter sports seasons.
North Texas is second on the points list with 68.5, followed by Middle Tennessee and New Mexico State with 54 counters each.
Hilltopper and Lady Topper teams also laid claim to runner-up points in women's cross-country and men's indoor track, and, the Toppers took third-place points in women's basketball and men's cross-country. Western teams placed no lower than fourth (women's soccer and women's indoor track) in the nine conference sports they have competed in to date. Western does not participate in the Sun Belt's I-A football league.
The spring sports that will figure in the final tally for the Vic Bubas Cup (named in honor of the conference's first commissioner) are: men's and women's golf, tennis and track, baseball, and softball.
