TROY, Ala. - After a five hour delay due to severe weather, the Lady Toppers (17-10, 5-3 SBC) and the Troy Trojans battled in out in Troy, Ala. in a doublehader for first place in the Sun Belt Conference. In game one, the Lady Toppers fell to Troy in the seventh inning 2-1 before falling in nine innings to the Trojans by the same score.
WKU struck first scoring the game’s first run in the top of the fourth inning. After starting the inning off with a single to left center field, junior Kelsey McCauley was the first Lady Topper to cross home plate after advancing to second off a fielder’s choice and scoring following a Rachelle Boucher single.
With a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, Troy’s Heidi Johnson hit her fifth homerun of the season to tie things up. The Trojans secured the victory in the top of the seventh inning when Sarah Harris hit a bomb over the left field fence to give Troy the 2-1 win.
Senior pitcher Ryan Rogge took the loss for the Lady Toppers going six innings and giving up seven hits and two runs. The Lady Toppers finished game one with five hits and one RBI but left 11 runners on base.
In game two, the Lady Toppers scored first scoring one run int he top of the third inning. This time it was Boucher who scored the run after reaching base after a single to left field. On first base, Boucher advanced to second after a sacrifice burn by junior Brooke Reed Lindsay Antone and gave WKU the 1-0 lead after a single.
The Trojans tied things up in the bottom of the fifth inning after two Troy hits and the game stayed tied through the ninth inning when Troy picked up their second victory of the day. The Trojans started the inning with a triple to left field and ended the game with a sacrifice fly that gave them the 2-1 victory.
The Lady Toppers ended the game with seven hits and one error while Antone finished the game 3-4. With the loss Jennifer Kempf fell to 4-6 on the season after giving up six hits. WKU and Troy will conclude the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT. Live stats will be available at www.wkusports.com.
