HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The WKU women's tennis team closed out its annual Alabama road swing with four wins in five matches during the university's spring break period this week. The Lady Toppers played four different teams in five days, with WKU facing off against Alabama A&M twice during the trip.

The four wins give the Lady Toppers seven wins in their last eight matches after starting the season 0-2.  

WKU opened and closed the trip with wins over Alabama A&M, picking up 5-2 wins on both Monday and Friday. The Lady Toppers dropped their only match of the trip to North Alabama, falling 5-2. 

WKU would rebound to close out the trip with three consecutive wins following Tuesday's loss to North Alabama, including a 6-1 win over Alabama-Huntsville and a 7-0 shutout of Alabama State.

The Lady Toppers are now 8-2 in their last 10 matches played in the state of Alabama, including a 7-1 mark over the last two years. 

The impressive run of sophomore Monta Reinfelde carried over into the state of Alabama, as Reinfelde improved to a perfect 20-0 in doubles and singles play combined, adding to an already record start from the No. 1 position. Reinfelde's 10-0 mark from the No. 1 singles spot is good for the best start at WKU since 2004 when Karina Ledaja started the season 12-0. Reinfelde pushed her career singles record to 24-4 — all from the top singles position.

Reinfelde won all five of her singles in straight sets, giving her nine wins via straight sets this season. Reinfelde and teammate Madeline Phillips improved to a perfect 9-0 as a doubles team in 2012, as the duo went 5-0 on the trip.

Phillips also turned in an impressive 4-1 record on the trip in singles, playing from three different positions in the Lady Topper lineup.

Outside of Phillips and Reinfelde, three other Lady Toppers picked up at least three singles wins on the trip. Sophomore Alex Crofford finished the week with a 3-2 record, but recorded a 3-1 mark when playing from the No. 4 singles spot. Freshman Carolina Barboza also finished 3-2 in singles play, playing all five matches from the No. 2 position in the WKU lineup. Barboza and Crofford teamed up in doubles play in all five matches, going an impressive 4-1 from the No. 2 spot, pushing their 2012 record as a duo to 7-3 — the second-best mark on the team.

Junior Katrina Vucina, who had missed the first five matches of season, returned to go 3-2 from three different singles positions, while also turning in an impressive 3-1 record in doubles play with teammate Morgan Freeman. Freeman closed out the week with four total doubles wins and a perfect 2-0 mark in singles play from the No. 6 position. Freeman and McKinley Mason paired together for a doubles win over Alabama A&M to open the trip.

As a whole, the Lady Toppers went 13-2 in doubles play for the trip and 21-9 in singles play. WKU is now 22-8 in doubles competition this season after going 33-19 in 2011.

WKU is scheduled to return action on March 25 with road matches against Tennessee State and Sun Belt Conference foe Middle Tennessee.
