Are you ready for some football? WKU Athletics counts you down to opening day at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium on September 1, 2012 with the 50-day “Countdown to Kickoff” series on WKUSports.com. Each day will be accompanied by a significant number in WKU football history.

VANCE COMPLETES 37 PASSES IN 1969 GAME

In an era where running the football was the primary game plan for most teams hitting the gridiron, WKU quarterback Johnny Vance showed what he could do with the aerial attack in a 1969 game against Akron. Vance completed a WKU record 37 passes against the Zips, including 15 to wide receiver Jay Davis.

The 37 completions went for 413 yards, which was also a record for 16 years until Jeff Cessarone threw for 494 yards against Akron in 1985. Vance finished the 1969 season with 1,943 yards passing, which stands fifth all-time for a single season. He finished his career with just over 4,000 yards passing, ranking him third all-time behind Justin Haddix and Jeff Cessarone.
