NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The WKU women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season Friday evening at Belmont, falling to the Bruins by a score of 5-2 at the Westside Athletic Club in Nashville, Tenn.
The Lady Toppers (1-1) cruised through doubles play, sweeping Belmont 3-0 to earn the doubles point. The highly touted duo of Monta Reinfelde and Madeline Phillips stayed undefeated on the year, improving their record to 2-0 after handling Belmont's top pair of Fabiana Mersan and Nikki Maciel 8-3.
Sophomore Carolina Barboza and junior Alex Crofford also kept their doubles record clean at 2-0 after beating Carolyn Caire and Erika Marschal 8-4 at the No.3 slot. WKU's No.2 pair of junior McKinley Mason and freshman Gabby Crofford notched their first win as a duo with an 8-3 decision over Catherine Holiday and Natalia Nunes.
Reinfelde was the only Lady Topper to emerge victorious in singles play, winning 6-1, 6-2 from the No.1 position over Belmont's Maciel. The win marked the 31st of Reinfelde's singles career, improving her career record to 31-5.
After falling at No.1 singles it was all Belmont, however, as the Bruins swept through the Lady Toppers No.2-No.6 players.
WKU returns to the court Feb. 16 for a showdown at Northern Kentucky.
