NEW ORLEANS - Picking up a win in its opening weekend, the Western Kentucky University women's swimming and diving swept the Sun Belt Conference Weekly Awards, as sophomore Allie Duff was named SBC Swimmer of the Week and senior Caitlin Dean earned SBC Diver of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
Duff, a native of Ontario, Canada, recorded two individual wins as well as a first-place finish with a relay as the Lady Toppers defeated Delta State 188-83 on Saturday. Duff swept the backstroke events after hitting the wall at 56.88 in the 100 back and 2:00.72 in the 200 back. She also helped WKU record a win in the 200-medley to open the meet with a time of 1:45.72. Duff closed the meet by swimming in the 200-free relay where the team finished at 1:39.30.
Duff had a breakout first season in her freshman campaign, compiling 19 top-2 finishes among six different events, including the 100- and 200-backstroke along with the 200 individual medley. She finished the season with 13 individual event wins.
Dean, from Grand Rapids, Mich., picked up her first win of the season by placing first in the 1-meter dive with a score of 278.76, which was more than twice the total of the second-place finisher and should qualify Dean for the NCAA Zone Diving at the end of the season. She also scored 266.85 in the 3-meter event. The senior is coming off a season where she tallied nine top-4 finishes, including in two events at the SBC Championships, and will look to top those marks this season.
With Duff and Dean earning weekly honors, it marks the first time WKU has swept the weekly awards since Stephanie Terrell (SOW) and Emily Waits (DOW) did it on January 21, 2009. The Lady Toppers won their second of three consecutive SBC Championships that season.
The Lady Toppers will host the team's annual Red and White Scrimmage on October 27 at 1 p.m. in Bill Powell Natatorium before facing their next opponents in Tulane and Vanderbilt in Nashville on Saturday, November 3 at 1 p.m.
