BOWLING GREEN, Ky.-The No. 20 Western Kentucky University volleyball team (22-3, 8-0 SBC) earned its 14th-straight win Saturday afternoon, as the Lady Toppers took their eighth-consecutive sweep in Sun Belt Conference play with a 3-0 win (25-17, 25-12, 25-15) against Florida Atlantic (6-13, 1-6 SBC) at E.A. Diddle Arena.
Sophomore Heather Boyan led the charge with 13 kills on 17 attempts with no errors, as the middle blocker hit a career-high .765 for the match. Senior Jordyn Skinner followed with nine while she led the team in digs with 14. Junior Ashley Potts added 12 digs to go along defensively with freshman Noelle Langenkamp's three blocks.
For FIU, Darija Sataric had six kills followed by Chandler Hatton's five. Sataric along with Isabelle Arboleda collected seven digs each.
Using a game-high .455 set hitting percentage, WKU took the first set of the match 25-17. Pairs of kills from Wessel, Boyan and Skinner helped WKU take a 12-9 lead to force a FAU timeout. After the break, the Lady Toppers used an 8-4 run to get ahead 20-13, as the team would go on to close the set with a block by Langenkamp and Wessel and a Wessel kill.
WKU carried the momentum of the win in set one to notch a 6-0 lead early in the second frame. The Owls would get within five points four times in the set, including 13-8, but scoring runs of four and five points late in the contest put WKU on route to take it 25-12. Boyan ended the set with six kills while Skinner and Potts had four digs each to help hold FAU to a .000 hitting mark.
The teams traded points to open the final frame, as it took five tied scores before WKU broke away from FAU. Knotted at 7, the Lady Toppers put together a 9-3 run to go up 16-11. In that spree, Skinner added two kills while Stutsman, Engle and Wessel had one each. Under the serve of senior Sarah Rogers, WKU added another big run of six-straight points on its way to closing the set at 25-15.
WKU hosts its last pair of weekend matches of the regular season next weekend, as the Lady Toppers take on Arkansas State on Friday, October 19 at 7 p.m. before facing UALR on Saturday, October 20 at noon in E.A. Diddle Arena.
