GADSDEN, Ala. - Two freshman were among three WKU players who finished in the top 30 at the Chris Banister Gamecock Classic to pace the Lady Toppers in their opening tournament of the 2012-2013 season.
With four freshman or sophomores in the lineup, WKU Women's Golf finished in seventh place at their opening tournament of the year. It marked the highest WKU finish in a tournament since March 18-20 at the MSU Ocala Spring Invitational in Ocala, Fla. when the Lady Toppers also finished seventh.
Freshman Michaela Bordeianu finished in a tie for 24th at the event after shooting a final round of 79, her best round of the event. Freshman Ellinor Haag finished in a tie for 27th. The duo make up the first pair of international players in the history of the program.
Sophomore April Butler (Paducah, Ky.) finished 29th after posting a tournament average (81.3) below her 2011-2012 average (81.62). Senior Dawn Wientjes (Metropolis, Ill.) finished 39th after posting her best round of the tournament on Tuesday with a 79. Sophomore Kate Larimore (Greensburg, Ky.) also capped the tournament on a high note with a tournament-best 81.
The team returns to the course on Sept. 17-18 when the team travels to the Great Smokies Intercollegiate in Waynesville, North Carolina. The tournament is hosted by Western Carolina.
