GADSDEN, Ala. - With four freshman or sophomores in the lineup, WKU Women's Golf finished their opening round of the 2012-2013 season in sixth place at the Chris Banister Gamecock Classic.
Freshman Ellinor Haag shot 78 in her WKU debut to lead the Lady Toppers. Haag and fellow freshman Michaela Bordeianu are the first international players in the history of the WKU Women's Golf program. Bordeianu was eight over par in her debut round at WKU (80).
Sophomore April Butler (Paducah, Kentucky) shot 80 (+8) in the first round, nearly two shots below her average from a year ago. She stands in 23rd place at +8 entering the second round.
Texas State leads the tournament after the first round, shooting 298. Middle Tennessee State's Ashley Haggard was the only player in the field to shoot under par in round one and holds a two shot lead entering round two after shooting 70 in the opening round.
Play continues on Monday in Gadsen with the third and final round set for Tuesday.
