Are you ready for some football? WKU Athletics counts you down to opening day at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium on September 1, 2012 with the 50-day “Countdown to Kickoff” series on WKUSports.com. Each day will be accompanied by a significant number in WKU football history.
REMEMBERING THE CAREER OF #44 - DALE LINDSEY
Only four Hilltopper football jerseys have earned the distinction of being “retired.” One of those four jerseys belongs to WKU Hall of Fame member Dale Lindsey.
Lindsey starred on the 1963 WKU football team that went undefeated and won the Tangerine Bowl. Lindsey, a linebacker, helped WKU to six wins by 20 or more points during the 1963 season, anchoring a Hilltopper defense that allowed only seven points per game and a school-record 48 yards per game rushing.
Lindsey continued his career in the NFL, playing for the Cleveland Browns from 1965-1972 and with the New Orleans Saints for the 1973 season. Following his playing career, Lindsey moved on to the coaching ranks, putting together 20 years of coaching at the NFL level, including time as the defensive coordinator with the San Diego Chargers.
Lindsey’s jersey was retired in 2007, joining Jimmy Feix, Virgil Livers and Willie Taggart as the only Hilltoppers to have their jersey retired.
