BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The WKU men's tennis team ended the 2012 regular season on a two-match winning streak following a 5-2 win over North Alabama at Bowling Green High School on Sunday.
WKU (7-10) claimed two of the three doubles to earn the all-important doubles point, then clinched the match by taking four of the six singles for the 5-2 win. The win over North Alabama is the second for the Hilltoppers this season, as they pulled out a 4-3 win on the road back on March 6. The Hilltoppers have now won three in a row over UNA dating back to last season.
Lance and Brody Freeman continued to roll since being paired in doubles play, as the duo improved to a perfect 8-0 following an 8-5 win from the No. 3 doubles position. Brody also claimed his third-straight singles win from the No. 6 spot in the lineup, taking down Jonathan Vick in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
Senior Craig Kirchgessner and freshman Andrew Fish picked up their second consecutive win as a doubles team, winning 8-5 from the No. 2 position. It was just the fourth time the two have been paired in doubles play this season, as the duo picked up their first win as a team on Saturday against Tennessee State.
Fish also improved to a team-best 9-4 on the season in singles play, winning 6-4, 6-4 over Rob Whitsitt from the No. 5 singles spot. Fish ends the regular season with a 5-1 record when playing from No. 5.
Josh Smith earned his seventh singles win from the No. 1 position in the Hilltopper lineup, giving him the most wins from No. 1 since Thomas Krug won 14 singles for WKU back in 2010. The Hilltoppers picked up only one win from the top singles spot last season. Smith took down Constantin Witten in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.
Senior Arul Selvan closed out his final regular season in a Hilltopper uniform with a thrilling three-set win from the No. 2 spot, winning 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 for his sixth singles win this season. Selvan and Kirchgesser were the two Hilltoppers seniors that saw action in their final home match, with Kirchgesser picking up a doubles win and Selvan the singles victory.
The Hilltoppers will now prepare for the 2012 Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Denton, Texas next week. The tournament opens up on Thursday, April 19, with pairings to be announced early next week.
