NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The WKU men's tennis team ended a four-match losing streak after claiming a 6-1 win over host Tennessee State on Saturday following a 5-0 loss to Southern Indiana on Friday. The win over the Tennessee State was the second this year for the Hilltoppers.
WKU (6-10) picked up wins in five of the six singles spots and swept the doubles portion of the match against Tennessee State.
Cousins Brody and Lance Freeman stayed perfect in doubles play this season, winning both matches against USI and Tennessee State to improve to a team-best 8-0 on the year. Lance Freeman won from the No. 2 singles spot against Tennessee State in straight sets, while Brody picked up a shutout win from the No. 5 position.
Freshman Andrew Fish improved to a team-best 8-4 on the year in singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Tennessee State's William Simmons from the No. 3 spot in the lineup. Fish improves to 2-1 when playing from the third position this season.
Senior Craig Kirchgessner recorded his fourth singles win in his last five matches, picking up a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jared Asher of Tennessee State. Kirchgessner and Fish also notched their first doubles win as a team against Tennessee State, as the duo won 8-2 from the No. 2 spot.
Josh Smith and Arul Selvan also found the win column in doubles play, as the duo won from the top spot in the doubles lineup for the second time this season with an 8-3 win over Tennessee State.
Both the Lady Toppers and the Hilltoppers will enjoy their regular season finale at home, as both squads will host North Alabama tomorrow afternoon at Bowling Green High School. The match will wrap up the 2012 regular season, with the Sun Belt Conference Tournament set to begin on Thursday, April 19. Brackets and seeds for the tournament will be released early next week.
