BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The WKU softball team completed a perfect 4-0 weekend in the Holiday Inn Hilltopper Spring Classic on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Indiana State Sycamores 10-2 at the WKU Softball Field. Senior Laura Smith went 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored. Junior pitcher Kim Wagner pitched five shutout innings in relief, striking out seven. The Lady Toppers have now won five games in a row.
Indiana State (1-3) got on the scoreboard first in the second inning. Shelby Wilson was hit by a pitch to start the inning, then reached second base on a passed ball. After Megan Bunting walked, Lindsey Beisser hit an infield single to load the bases with no outs. WKU's (10-3) starting pitcher Brittanie Albright then induced an infield fly for the first out. Hailey Tinsman stepped up to the plate and hit into a fielder's choice with Preslie Cruce throwing home to put out Wilson. With two outs, Megan Stone hit a two-run single to center field to give the Sycamores a 2-0 lead.
The Lady Toppers came back in a big way in the top of the fourth. Cruce led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch. Amanda Thomas then reached base on a Beisser error. Katrina Metoyer then loaded the bases with a bunt single. After a fielder's choice put Cruce out at home, Smith cleared the bases with a double to give WKU a 3-2 lead. Karavin Dew then had an RBI base hit, scoring Smith to make the score 4-2. After a strikeout, Shawna Sadler hit a double to center field bringing Dew around to score. Sadler was thrown out trying to get to third, ending an inning that saw the Lady Toppers score five runs.
Wagner then struck out four batters over the next two innings to preserve WKU's lead. The Lady Toppers added two runs in the top of the sixth as Metoyer scored on an error and Smith scored on an RBI groundout by Smith to go ahead 7-2. Smith added an RBI double in the top of the seventh, one of three WKU runs scored in the seventh to give the Lady Toppers' the 10-2 win.
"We showed some offensive improvement this weekend, going 4-0," said head coach Tyra Perry. "There were a couple times where we could have dropped games and we turned it around and got on the right track. I'm really excited about our clutch-hitting and hitting at key times."
Dew finished the game 2-for-4 wtih two RBI. Metoyer was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and a stolen base.
WKU returns to the road next weekend to play in the 2012 Buzz Classic hosted by Georgia Tech. The Lady Toppers take on Jacksonville State at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 2 and Georgia State at 4 p.m.
