Are you ready for some football? WKU Athletics counts you down to opening day at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium on September 1, 2012 with the 50-day “Countdown to Kickoff” series on WKUSports.com. Each day will be accompanied by a significant number in WKU football history.
STINGY 1963 DEFENSE ALLOWS ONLY 48 RUSHING YARDS PER GAME
The 1963 Hilltoppers have forever etched their names in the WKU record books, completing an undefeated season at 10-0-1, winning the 1963 Tangerine Bowl under head coach Nick Denes.
Denes’ Hilltoppers stifled opponents’ offenses – especially the run game. WKU held the opposition to just 48 yards per game on the ground, the fifth-best mark in the nation in 1963, setting a WKU school record that still stands today.
The 1963 Hilltoppers won six games by 20 or more points, while never allowing an opponent to score more than 14 points in a game. WKU gave up only seven points per game in 1963, closing the season on a nine-game winning streak – a streak that did not end until week two of the 1964 season. The 10-game winning streak stands as the third-longest win streak in WKU football history.
