Are you ready for some football? WKU Athletics counts you down to opening day at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium on September 1, 2012 with the 50-day “Countdown to Kickoff” series on WKUSports.com. Each day will be accompanied by a significant number in WKU football history.
49 PERCENT OF 2010 OFFENSE BELONGS TO RAINEY
In a season when junior running back Bobby Rainey began to put his stamp on the WKU football program, the Griffin, Ga., native accounted for 49 percent of the Hilltopper offense in 2010, rushing for over 1,600 yards, to go along with 230 yards receiving in the first year under new head coach Willie Taggart.
Rainey averaged 78 yards per game on the ground in 2009, but upped that total to over 137 rushing yards per game in 2010, carrying the ball 340 times during the 2010 campaign.
The 2010 season propelled Rainey to become the program’s all-time leading rusher in 2011, while also rushing for a school record 1,695 yards in his senior season. Rainey ranked third in the nation in rushing yards in 2011, and closed his career on the Hill by being named to five different all-America teams following his senior season and was named Co-Offensive Player of the Year by the Sun Belt Conference for the second consecutive season.
Rainey is currently a member of the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens, signing a free agent deal in 2012.
